OUR STORY
A house is more than a home and this is especially true of Whitestown House. Located near the Naul, a picturesque village in north county Dublin, the area is rich in history dating back to pre-Christian times. Tradition tells of St. Patrick blessing the lands here and St. Canice is said to have raised a number of holy wells capable of curing diseases in the area. Numerous battles were fought in the locality, which was once an important stop for the mail-coach with wonderful stories of highway men and women.
The Whitestown House demesne dates back to the 1600s, when purchased for twelve pounds in 1641 by the Earl of Ormond it consisted of 120 acres, 3 roods and 10 perches. What makes Whitestown remarkable in county Dublin is that the demesne has remained intact to this day. By 1822, Whitestown belonged to the Woods family who made very advantageous matches, marrying into the Hamiltons of Holmpatrick and the Taylors of Argillan Castle, uniting three of the great families of north county Dublin.
Whitestown House was built in the 1840s by Sandham Symes, chief architect to the Royal Dublin Society. He was 'particularly remarked for his neat and quiet taste, also for his great accuracy’. These qualities are visible in the proportions of the rooms and the wonderful stonework at Whitestown. The house has a storied history of hospitality, it was almost burned to the ground during the civil war because of the tennis parties and dances that were held here for officers.
Our estate is constantly evolving. It has always been farmed, providing rich grazing for sheep and cattle. In the 1980s a pheasant and duck shoot was developed, which still runs to this day. The walled garden is home to our hens, ducks and native Irish red deer and our vegetable and herb garden gives us bountiful, seasonal produce to create delicious meals.
Bee hives are our most recent addition, already providing delicious honey for the table, wax for candle making and of course pollinating our fruit and flowers.
This house was our father’s dream. He cycled by the gates as a child and wondered who lived here. Little did he know that years later he would take ownership and begin the journey of restoration and regeneration of the estate. Jimmy and Hazel Keogh bought Whitestown House in 1999, and since then they have worked hard to restore the house and outbuildings, rebuild the two gate lodges and plant almost 4,000 trees on the estate.
Jimmy has trusted us to continue his work and that of all the previous families who have had the privilege of living on this beautiful estate, a tapestry woven with care and dedication, where each thread tells a story of growth, renewal, and connection to the land. A little like the elusive past of this wonderful place, its future remains full of hope and possibilities. Our plans include workshops, events and dining clubs. We hope you will become part of this journey with us.
We embark on the beginning of a new chapter in Whitestown House, now in the hands of the women in the family with mum Hazel and sisters Aoife and Kelly at the helm.
Hazel brings her wealth of experience hosting large parties, renowned for welcoming and entertaining guests over the years. A keen cook and homemaker, Hazel’s warmth and hospitality is legendary and much loved.
Aoife’s background is in the art industry, and her creativity and artistic flare is woven into the very fabric of Whitestown House. Aoife designs our events, whether it is in her tablescaping, creating bespoke themes, or adding her personal touches to our functions.
Ballymaloe trained Kelly, with her expertise in planning events, health and safety and culinary arts, ensures that our gatherings are a symphony of flavours, crafted from seasonal, local, and home-grown ingredients. And of course Hazel keeps an expert eye on it all, ensuring that the spirit and warmth of Irish country house hospitality is experienced by all our guests. Whitestown House is at its best when filled with people and laughter. While you may arrive as strangers we hope that when you depart, it will be as friends.
